Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman recommends $20m for Small Shipyards

This week, the Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Pat Leahy released his FY2022 appropriations proposals, which includes $20 million for the next round of Small Shipyard Grants (see PDF p.96).

Senate:

Key committee Chair proposed $20 million

Reconciliation bill

*negotiations ongoing

House:

Approved an extra $60 million/yr for 5 years. This may get cut back as negotiations continue this week.

Senate:

Hasn't taken it up yet

As we know when it comes to federal legislation, it's never over till it's over. But if I'm planning for future potential grant opportunities, then- as of today- I'd consider that the next round of small shipyard grants may likely be available in early 2022.

Getting Ready for the Next Round

We recommend targeting projects that will be ready during summer 2022 or later. If the funding available is at least $20 million, award amounts may look similar to those awarded in 2021. We anticipate a greater emphasis on environmental sustainability in MARAD's awards next round. Last, it's not too early to start preparing your application!
